In January 2026, the Prime Minister announced that from 2027, the government would implement voluntary Year 1 entry for children aged six.[1] This means parents can choose whether their child starts Year 1 at six or at seven.[2]
Early admission is a voluntary option for parents and is not compulsory.[2] It depends entirely on the readiness of the child.[2] Children who enter Year 1 at six will follow six years of primary school and five years of secondary school, completing upper secondary education at 16.[2]

Alongside the age change, a new national curriculum — Kurikulum Persekolahan 2027 — will be introduced gradually, beginning with Year 1 and Form 1 in 2027.[4] The Ministry of Education is actively preparing for this, which will involve Year 1 and Form 1 students.[6]
The Ministry of Education says there will be no rejection of enrolment applications for six-year-old children opting to enter Year One beginning in 2027.[5] Parents who choose to enrol their children in Year One at the age of six are not required to register them in preschool.[5]
The Ministry of Education is preparing infrastructure by optimising existing facilities and implementing double sessions in selected areas if necessary.[5]
There is no single right age. Early entry depends on your child's readiness.[2] Visit the schools you are considering. Talk to your child's preschool teacher if they have one. Private schools run their own admissions, so ask each school how it assesses readiness.
